- Although instrument flying is much more hazardous, do you believe flying an IFR flight plan in IMC is safer?
Yes I do, the whole IFR system is designed to be much safer and much more efficient than VFR flight.
- How safe would you consider the FAA minimum VFR standards are, on a scale of 1-10? Why?
Personally I believe that the current standards are around 8 of 10. I believe they are very safe for the typical pilot but I believe there should be higher minimums for people with under 250hrs
3. If a well-trained private pilot miraculously fell into IMC conditions, with today’s system, do you believe ATC would advise them before they get into hazardous way? Why?
Air Traffic control cannot see clouds on their radarscope, I don’t believe that a pilot would be advised in enough time. But there is way more than enough training a pilot must accomplish before they can get their pilots license.
4. How would you rate the current ATC system?
As far as there help, very good. But it definitely varies based on the airports.
5. Have you ever flown in airspace outside of SOCAL departure/arrivals? If yes, is it much different?
Yes, there is way more traffic than in southern California.
6. Do you believe GPS has significantly helped safety in flight?
Yes, definitely. It aggravates me to see how many planes don’t have GPS in their planes.
7. Do you believe flying a VOR to VOR IFR trip is unpractical with today’s system?
No, they have been doing it since the fifties it is very safe.
8. What is LIFR? What type of equipment does an aircraft need in order to fly an LIFR approach?
LIFR means Limited Visibility Instrument Flight Rules. It is very hazardous and an aircraft must have a CAT-I ILS approach capable FMS to fly one.
9. Do you believe IFR or MVFR is safer to fly?
IFR, you always get bold pilots flying in MVFR, at least in IFR you know everyone in your area is Instrument Rated.
10. What instrument do you believe is most important when using a visual scan?
Altimeter, without your altimeter it doesn’t matter if your engine is working or not, your basically in harms way.
